Handmade wool felt

Our wool felt textiles are constructed from multiple layers of wool from Old Norwegian Short-Tailed Landrace (Gammalnorsk Spælsau) combined with silk, wool from Norwegian Pelt Sheep (Pelssau), and merino wool. The thickness of the wool felt textiles varies from approximately 3-7 mm.

Plant dyes

Any additional coloring in our panels comes from 100% organic dyes, extracted from Norwegian flora including mosses, mushrooms, and other varieties of plants found in the wild, and also plant dyes from other countries.

Oak and Maple frame

The frames are filled with 30mm wool insulation

Visible measurements: 20 x 45mm

Concealed frame

The concealed frames are constructed out of plywood and filled with 48mm wool insulation.

Mounting

Oak frames:

The frames are provided with an angled edge at the back of the frame. This allows the frame to be hung on a slat on the wall

Concealed frames:

The frames are equipped with 2 slats. A third slat can be attached to the wall, onto which the frame can then be hung

Standard frame sizes

We have three standard frame sizes. These are 60x90cm, 90x90cm, and 90x120cm.

Wall installation

The woolfelt textiles can be mounted directly on any wall.

Details for mounting will be provided depending on the project.

Soft Cells - Kvadrat Acoustics

The Flokk & Fjell wool felt textiles can be installed onto Soft Cells a product of Kvadrat Acoustics.

Qualities of wool in interior design

Qualities of wool from Old Norwegian Short Tale Landrace (gammalnorsk spælsau) in interior design:

Sound Absorption: Wool also has excellent sound-absorbing properties, reducing noise in a space and contributing to a quieter and more pleasant acoustic environment.

Moisture Regulation: Wool has inherent moisture-wicking properties, helping to regulate humidity levels in a space by absorbing excess moisture and releasing it back into the air when needed, and contributing to a healthier indoor environment.

Durability: Wool is naturally durable and resilient.

Fire Resistance: Wool is a natural fire-retardant material widely used in various applications such as interior textiles, carpets, and insulation. Wool has excellent fire-resistant properties. It has a high ignition temperature and burns slowly, making it less prone to catching fire quickly. Wool produces minimal smoke and does not drip when burning, reducing the spread of fire. Wool has the ability to char rather than melt, thus maintaining its structure and providing protection against burning.

Self-Cleaning: Wool fibers contain lanolin, a natural wax that repels dirt and dust, making wool inherently resistant to soiling. This self-cleaning property minimizes the need for frequent maintenance, making it a practical choice for busy interiors.

Natural Aesthetic: Biophilic design incorporates natural elements into workspaces to enhance well-being and productivity. Wool, a natural material, contributes to this by fostering a sense of comfort and reducing stress.

The use of Old Norwegian Short Tale Landrace wool is sustainable for several reasons

  1. Adaptation to Local Environment: Gammel norsk spælsau is a traditional Norwegian breed that has evolved over centuries to thrive in the rugged and varied Norwegian landscape. Their ability to withstand harsh weather conditions and utilize sparse forage makes them well-suited for extensive grazing systems, minimizing the need for artificial inputs like feed and medications.

  1. Low Environmental Impact: These sheep have minimal impact on the environment due to their grazing habits. They are known for their ability to maintain grasslands without causing excessive damage, unlike some other livestock breeds that may overgraze pastures. This helps preserve biodiversity and soil health.

  2. Genetic Diversity: By raising gammel norsk spælsau, farmers contribute to the preservation of genetic diversity within the livestock population. Traditional breeds often possess unique genetic traits that can be valuable for breeding programs aimed at improving resilience to diseases and environmental stressors.

  3. Cultural Heritage Preservation: Farming with gammel norsk spælsau helps preserve Norway's cultural heritage. These sheep are an integral part of Norwegian farming traditions and play a role in maintaining rural landscapes and traditional agricultural practices.

  4. Sustainable Wool Production: Gammel norsk spælsau produce wool that is prized for its quality and durability. Sustainable wool production methods, such as humane shearing practices and environmentally friendly wool processing, can be employed, ensuring that the production process has minimal negative impact on the environment.

  5. Support for Local Economy: By raising gammel norsk spælsau, farmers can contribute to the local economy by producing high-quality meat and wool products. This supports small-scale agriculture and helps maintain rural communities.
